Two Zen monks from Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village Community explain how they participated and helped negotiators during the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, held November 1-12, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland.
A good example of how these techniques can help in situations of high anxiety on a global scale.
95. "Returning to the Heartwood" with Meditation

Returning to the Heartwood
In the “Conference of the Trees” - organized by The New York Times Climate Hub as part of COP 26 - there was a beautiful moment of reflection and meditation led by Zen monks Phap Dung and Brother Spirit from Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village Community.
Some special moments of this session:
  • A beautiful guided meditation;
  • A reflection on how to deal with the anxiety problems that the climate situation generates among those involved;
  • Some Qi Gong exercises at the end to balance the energy.
96. You Are "Mother Earth"
Silence: Brother Phap Dung about Mother Earth
Silence: Brother Phap Dung about Mother Earth
The Zen Monk Brother Phap Dung tells us about some vital “personal” aspects for solving environmental problems.
  • How we have to realize that climate change results from a lack of spiritual progress;
  • How this society of exaggerated consumption is based on our inability to deal with suffering and to look to consumerism as a way to overcome this inability;
  • As these changes require each one of us to learn, on a personal level, to deal with suffering, to face it and not run away from it, to find in it a friend and even a source of joy
“You are Mother Earth. To take care of yourself is also to take care of Mother Earth. Mother Earth is not an environment out there that we have to save. Mother Earth is your body, your mind that you need to take care of.” Brother Phap Dung
