I know of no cure for violence, but I know that we must search. From Ferguson to Vegas, from your neighborhood baseball field to the two bedroom house next door, the subversive surrounds us. Corrosive and vampiric, it draws strength, chiefly, from being ignored. A little sunlit storytelling burns at the edges, though. Awareness fertilizes action. This week’s stories are from the underground, a place we need recognize, a place some of us already know, a place we all must go. Enjoy. -Lucas

The Kids of Ferguson Rise Up
“One morning, I pulled up to the intersection of Canfield and Copper Canyon, the precise location where [Michael] Brown was killed… Signs bearing inspirational messages lined Canfield for some 25 feet. One, in particular, stood out. It read: ‘They Tried To Bury Us, They Didn’t Know We Are Seeds.’” Alex French | MTV News

The Vegas Plot
“The mission: Kidnap a cop at a traffic stop. Jail him (or her, but likely him) at a house in the burbs. Hold their own trial. And then: ‘Put a bullet in his head,’ David said. He grinned.” Ashley Powers | California Sunday Magazine

The Bat Doctor Is In
“This is the extremely paranoid world of ‘bat doctoring,’ the dark and ridiculous subsection of one of our nation’s most tame neighborhood sports, where some players spend upwards of four figures and literally risk lives to hit a ball kinda far and maybe, just maybe … win a cheap plastic trophy or nearly-unwearable T-shirt at the end of the season.” Rick Paulas | SB Nation

The Body Behind the Little White Church
“The men of the town covered the graffiti. The husbands and fathers of Logan, neighbors of the missing girl, used black paint — more coats than were necessary. They covered the graffiti with censor marks, with gags.” Alison Stine | Narratively

Fitted
“Every means of confession creates a kind of person who confesses. You become who you are by saying what you did.” Moira Weigel | The New Inquiry
