THE REALITY OF BEING AN SMM 💼
Every week, social media managers (anonymously) spill the beans…
Tell us a little about you and your role!
I work for a large company with a very small marketing budget- i’m a one man social band with a lot of work to do! I manage the organic content for all our social channels but alongside that I also support on wider marketing campaigns including (but not limited to) paid social, emails, copywriting, e-commerce and graphic design. It’s a lot!
Favourite thing about working in social?
I think that you get some of the best understanding of the customer by engaging with them on social. You get instant feedback and I love that I’m able to sit in meetings and advocate on behalf of the customer: you don’t realise how much you’re taking in from comments and DMs until you hear yourself being able to (usually pretty accurately) predict sentiment.
Least favourite thing about working in social?
I sometimes find it really hard that the work that we do is so visible. If I make a mistake on social, the entire business knows about it. That’s a lot of pressure to deal with 24/7.
Find yourself a good community of social media managers online - especially if you are a one man band! It can be so easy to think that you’re the only one dealing with these challenges. But I can promise you that you’re not!
