THE REALITY OF BEING AN SMM 💼
Every week, social media managers (anonymously) spill the beans…
Tell us a little about you and your role!
My official title is “Social Media Specialist”. The company I work for owns many brands. I manage the organic content for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for two brands, while consulting for 3-5 other brands at any given time. We hire an agency to manage Facebook ads, although I work with them minimally and sometimes create small paid campaigns. I’m the only person with full access to all these platforms most of the time. I have some resources for content creation but managing workflow and expectations is a constant challenge.
Favourite thing about working in social?
The freedom I have to be creative; the feeling of being “in the trenches” engaging with our followers to understand how they view our brands. It makes an extremely corporate job feel extremely human.
Least favourite thing about working in social?
The constant need to master each platform to your advantage, the technically hoop jumping that’s necessary to have organic content perform most efficiently and effectively. Also work/life balance - I’m not expected to work out of hours but it’s almost inevitable since i’m a department of one person.
As a social media manager, we’re not doing work that will cause the world to stop turning. It’s easy to get bogged down in details and get super stressed out when your campaign or content isn’t doing as well as you’d like. My mantra - “Nobody has lost a limb. We’re not curing cancer. Everything will be fine.” I take a lot of pride in my work and hold myself to a high standard, but protecting my mental and emotional health at all costs is paramount to being able to continue to do a good job.
