Dear Diary…
Well isn’t this exciting. Just me and you… and a few thousand other social media managers.
As many of you have rightly asked me, “whose idea was it to take on a weekly newsletter alongside a full time job in social?!”
The answer is… mine. It was mine 😭
Anyway, my complete disregard for boundaries and work life balance aside, I’m excited to be here for this NUMERO UNO edition. But mostly, I’m excited to let the people know the real deal with being a social media manager. And I’m doubly excited to finally have a way to let you in on the secrets I keep in that pink hair of mine.
So, all you cool cats and kittens… Strap in.
We’ve got gossip, viral campaigns, confessions, jobs and memes. Get your scroll on.

THE NO. 1 BURNING QUESTION 💥
I’ve never had as many DMs as I have on this topic…
“How do social media managers avoid burnout?”
I’ll be honest, even before I decided that a side hustle in social media was a good plan, this was still no. 1 on my list of priorities. So while we wait for that magic wand to do its thing, I’ve got 10 ways to avoid burnout.
For you and me both 😭
HOT GOSSIP 🔥
Did Venmo just pull off the greatest PR move of all time?
Let June 28th be known as Venmo Day. In case you missed it, Venmo pulled off the ultimate Twitter heist with their $100,000 giveaway. With over a quarter of a million RTs, their social team absolutely killed it.
But word on the street wonders if this clever little stunt was actually an incredibly well timed coincidence to disguise their new fees for small businesses introduced on the same day.
Viral campaign or GOAT PR move? Guess we’ll never know…

BRANDS KILLING IT ONLINE 💪
Something groundbreaking caught my eye this week…
Nike’s ‘Play New’ Campaign has some absolutely SICK Snapchat activations which, in all honesty, make me feel like I need to up my game. Their AR lenses invite you to take part in sports you’ve never tried before, with instructions and gamification in built. Alongside the episodic content they’re publishing on their TikTok, it’s a pretty incredible example of a completely integrated campaign.
And if you haven’t seen the latest ad from ‘Play New’ you might just want to take a look as an example of boundary smashing creative.
WE LOVE TO SEE IT, NIKE 😭

A small, unknown gem for you… Thank me later.
Digital Brand Bites collates some of the most notable moments of brands on social: the good, the bad and the ugly.
Quick to pick up on the latest happenings and with intelligent commentary to boot, I’m truly at a loss to work out how the account only has 108 (!!!) followers. Unless I’m the only one who can’t find the time to keep on top of every brand moment? *please say i’m not*
Anyway, not quite sure why i’m sharing because now you’re all going to know where I get my intel from. But there you have it, there is a land called ‘Bad Decisions’ and I’m their Queen 👑
CONFESSIONS FROM THE DMs 🤫
Oh, we got tea to spill, babies…
Can someone please tell me which brand accidentally became a Queen Elizabeth II stan account? I beg.
Let this be a lesson to all bosses who still won’t give the social media managers a work phone.

THE REALITY OF BEING AN SMM 💼
Every week, social media managers (anonymously) spill the beans…
Tell us a little about you and your role!
My official title is “Social Media Specialist”. The company I work for owns many brands. I manage the organic content for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for two brands, while consulting for 3-5 other brands at any given time. We hire an agency to manage Facebook ads, although I work with them minimally and sometimes create small paid campaigns. I’m the only person with full access to all these platforms most of the time. I have some resources for content creation but managing workflow and expectations is a constant challenge.
Favourite thing about working in social?
The freedom I have to be creative; the feeling of being “in the trenches” engaging with our followers to understand how they view our brands. It makes an extremely corporate job feel extremely human.
Least favourite thing about working in social?
The constant need to master each platform to your advantage, the technically hoop jumping that’s necessary to have organic content perform most efficiently and effectively. Also work/life balance - I’m not expected to work out of hours but it’s almost inevitable since i’m a department of one person.
Top tip
As a social media manager, we’re not doing work that will cause the world to stop turning. It’s easy to get bogged down in details and get super stressed out when your campaign or content isn’t doing as well as you’d like. My mantra - “Nobody has lost a limb. We’re not curing cancer. Everything will be fine.” I take a lot of pride in my work and hold myself to a high standard, but protecting my mental and emotional health at all costs is paramount to being able to continue to do a good job.

THE ‘A’ MEME 👑
Your favourite meme of the week
aaaaaaand i'm done
aaaaaaand i'm done
So that’s it. That’s me and my diary. Until next week, friends.
Remember, my DMs are always open. Send me your secrets and confessions, or just let me know a little about you and your life as a social media manager. I’ll keep it all safe. Before publishing it on the internet, of course.
Work in social they said. It’ll be fun, they said.
Peace out ✌️
xoxo
