Here in Switzerland, autumn is a verb. When you can see and feel autumn happeningall around you, “it’s autumning” – es herbstelet. I just thought you should know that. (See also, “es weihnachtet” – it’s Christmassing!)
Pink is the best autumn colour. It's not even my favourite colour, I just like how it shocks
This excellent piece on the philosophical underpinnings of Indian fashion trends takes in everything from Ruskin to Gandhi. Read in conjunction with this on Nigerian designer Amaka Osakwe, specifically the contrast between adire and ankara fabric traditions. The term “cultural appropriation” is thrown around constantly (and yes: it’s a real problem) but the truth about the cross-fertilisation of fashion (and the rest of culture) is far more complex. I’m always glad of a chance to learn and think more about the moral baggage of aesthetic choices.
I absolutely cannot wait to visit the Zeitz MOCAA on our next trip home. The largest contemporary art museum in Africa (with incredible architecture) is intended as a “platform for Africans to tell their own story”. Too bad it’s owned and designed by white men…
PicMonkey used to be the best known collage maker, but they’ve dramatically reduced their free options. I’m hearing that Fotor is a powerful alternative, combining photo editing, collage and graphic design features, both on the web and in mobile apps. It’s also worth checking out their blog for tutorials and design tips.
Chrome extension Weava lets you save and organise interesting articles, and highlight the relevant bits – perfect for academics, also interesting for casual users. And online editor Typely promises to rid your prose of redundancy, cliché, ambiguity, sexism, even broken links. As a professional copy editor I am of course mortally offended to think I could be replaced by a robot! I’m also entirely intrigued.
Until next time, I’ll be making the most of the knitting season (there’s a new pattern on the way!), while dreaming of elephants that look like they couldn’t possibly be too big to come snuffling in the back door and going for the cat food.
