Good Morning & Happy Independence Day!
  • More than a dozen historic houses of worship will open up their doors today for the First Freedom Open House. During the open house, participants will be able to learn how the building or congregation symbolize Newport’s commitment to freedom of religion and religious diversity.
  • Chances are that you’ll see volunteers from the Artillery Company of Newport out there today. Read more about them and their Fourth of July rituals here.
Enjoy a wide variety of Independence Day events throughout Newport this morning, including a reading of the Declaration of Independence!
  • 9:00 am: Ceremony by the DAR/SR at the grave of William Ellery, RI signer of the Declaration of Independence, at the Common Burying Ground, Farewell St. Musket salute by the Newport Artillery Company.
  • 10:00 am: Old Colony House open for tours, Washington Square.
  • 10:00 am: Newport Community Band at Washington Square. Patriotic tunes, Jazz and Show tunes.
  • 11:00 am: Reading of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Old Colony House as was done in 1776.
  • 11:30 am: Newport Artillery Company 21-gun salute to the nation using original cannons cast by Paul Revere.
