Good Morning,
Today is Thursday, August 29th. Here’s the latest from What'sUpNewp and a look at what’s happening, new, and to do in and around Newport today…
  • Newport City Council met for just about two hours last night (video of the meeting). Food Trucks pretty much ruled the night and took up the most time during the meeting. New amendments were introduced by Councilor McCalla last night so we’re still trying to understand them all (and get copies of them), but pretty much food trucks (max of 6) now have the green light to operate at King Park, Miantonomi Park, and in the zoning business district (must stay 250 ft from restaurants). Food carts (max of 6) can operate at approximately six different locations in the city. Once we have copies of the amendments and the full food truck law, we’ll post a full story on the site.
  • Max O'Hara (from Liverpool, England) will be providing the entertainment this evening at Music On The Lawn at St. John’s. 6 pm - 8:30 pm.
  • Hazards Beach, Gooseberry Beach, and Fort Adams State Park Beach are closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels.
  • PBS is sharing Onne van der Wal’s story - Second Wind. The film goes in to his early days in South Africa, his professional yacht racing career, photography and how he refits his 1972 Pearson 36 Snoek. He explains what motivated him to buy and old tired boat, park it in his driveway, rebuild it and created a comfortable little cruising boat. It will air on Wednesday, September 4th at 9:00 p.m on RI PBS. You can watch a some of of it here.
  • 35 of 38 Senators and 20 of 75 House members have signed letters to Governor Raimondo calling for bicycle and pedestrian funding to be restored in Amendment 19.
  • McGrath Clambakes will host their 50th Anniversary clambake this evening. It is now sold out.
Have a great day,
~ What'sUpNewp Crew
