What's on Weibo
There are over 20 million people left in this city, pretending to live. In reality, there simply is no life in this city,” Chinese blogger Zhang Wumao writes in a controversial essay that went viral on Wechat and Weibo earlier this week. The author describes Beijing as a city that is so big and crowded and is changing so fast, that it has become unlivable for its residents - life is “fake” for the old Beijingers and for its new immigrants.
The essay has sparked wide debate in the Chinese media. As the hype snowballed, it has now been taken offline by censors. See our coverage of this topic and the full translation of the essay here.
