What's on Weibo
Britain’s vote to leave the EU is dominating the headlines worldwide. ‘Brexit’ also made it to the number one spot of Weibo’s trending topics list under the hashtag of ‘Britain out of EU Referendum’ (‪#‎英国脱欧公投‬#) today. Some findings after hours long readings on Chinese media reactions on ‪‎Brexit‬ today:
- 1. Overall the outcome of the Brexit referendum is seen as “risk of democracy and populism”, 65% of Chinese netizens think populism is a dangerous global trend.
- 2. Many think Cameron has caused a butterfly effect and predict that the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Austria will be next.
- 3. China’s biggest state media newspaper has no space for Brexit news; Putin and Xi Jinping are shaking hands on the front page and Sino-Russia bilateral relations and their strategic partnership are more important than Brexit & Europe news.
