Your unique story is the “X factor” in your freelance business.
It’s how you differentiate your services and business from the others.
It’s your secret sauce and something that NO ONE on earth can replicate.
Leveraging that unique blend of experiences, knowledge, and skills is how you win as a freelancer.
The hard part is telling that story in a compelling way.
How are some ways to do this:
1) Take inventory of your experiences (professional and personal), skills, and lifestyle. Here are some places to start:
Were you born in an interesting, unusual place?
Do you have a unique trait or ability?
Did you have an uncommon career before starting your freelance biz?
Are you related to some historical figure?
Why are you in the niche that you’re currently in?
You’re going to realize that you’re more interesting than you think ;)
Understanding how your experiences make you stand out is also therapeutic. It helps you to have a greater awareness of your strengths rather than shine a spotlight on your shortcomings.
As freelancers, we know that imposter syndrome and the feeling of inadequacy are very, very real. Making a sustained effort to highlight your strengths soothes imposter syndrome and keeps you focused.
2) Connecting the dots
This is where you shape your story into a powerful answer to the question, “why are you the best choice for your clients?”
I’ve been location independent for 5 years and have traveled the world extensively while growing my freelance business. When I’m on discovery calls with clients, my love for travel and longevity in remote work are massive differentiators.
Secondly, the high work standards and professionalism as a traveling freelancer demonstrate to clients that I’m disciplined and trustworthy.
The best sales pitch is your story. Own it.
Until next time ✌️
