Verify Engineering Update
Thanks for reading the Verify Engineering Update! Please share any feedback you have in this issue, or send it to me directly either on Slack, or to

Welcome Touni! 🎉
Romauld Atchadé joined the Runner Group a few weeks ago as a Backend Engineer. Romauld (or “Touni”) lives in Quebec City, Canada, and we’re excited to welcome him to the team!
More Random Coffee
Some of the feedback from Verify Team Day was that folks enjoyed the Random Coffee session, so we decided to keep it going! All you need to do is join the #s_verify-random-coffee channel in Slack and you’ll be paired up with someone for a random coffee chat every 6 weeks. Thanks to Cheryl for setting this up!
Incidents & Rapid Action
We’ve seen several incidents in the last few weeks (1, 2, 3). Some related to growth, some related to abuse of our platform, and some related to areas where we need to improve our processes. While a number of corrective actions are already in progress, we’ve also initiated the Improve Ops Quality Working Group, and the Verify DB Queries Rapid Action.
If you like to be involved in the Working Group, please let Joanna or your manager know.
The Rapid Action has already produced some encouraging results. If you’d like to follow along feel free to join the #rapid-action-verify-db-queries Slack channel, or watch for updates in the epic.
Expanded CI/CD Configuration Viewer
You can now view an expanded version of your pipeline yaml from within the pipeline editor. Huge props to Fred for seeing this one through and re-architecting the editor in the mean-time.
Code Quality Comparison Backend Computation
As part of our Code Quality notices on MR diffs epic we’ve moved the comparison of code quality reports to the backend. This allowed us to set up some groundwork for using the correct base comparison commit on the backend which will be useful for other teams with noisy MR widgets. Thanks Max, Drew, and Miranda for great collaboration on this!
Major Frontend Technical Debt Cleanup
We’ve been making a lot of headway on the frontend technical debt, creating 39 issues and closing 33 in February alone. We already smashed our OKR target for this and have almost quintupled our efforts in the entire of FY21-Q3.
MR Widget Collaboration
Collaboration has begun between Verify and Create to decouple the logic properly in our MR Widget and we’re seeing some nice results so far.
Group Level Feature Flags Needing Attention
We now have an automated triage report to call out Feature Flags that may need attention - many thanks to Fabio for helping us write a CLI tool to generate the list of overdue FFs, and convert his code to a rubygem to use in our automation!
Culture ☘️
St. Patrick’s Day is a big deal here in Chicago. There are a ton of parades and other events, but one of the main attractions is watching dyeing of the river. Here’s a good drone video from a couple years ago (paired with some overly dramatic music). There is also my personal favorite event - the Shamrock Shuffle 8k, which usually draws around 35,000 runners.
Of course, all of these events were canceled last year and this year, but 🤞for 2022!
Thanks again for reading, and don’t forget to add any feedback you have to this issue, or send it to me directly either on Slack, or to
