The Woman On The Crane & Why You Should Think Twice Before You Post
Toronto emergency personnel rescued a woman who climbed to the top of a construction crane in Toronto early yesterday morning. As onlookers and social media applauded the firefighter who brought her to the ground, some very weird assumptions and jokes about who this woman is and why she climbed the crane emerged online.
It’s become instinctual to grab our phones and start shooting when we see something surprising or unusual, but we need to start thinking more carefully about how we share these images as an emergency unfolds. In the last month, we’ve read too many stories, local and abroad, about people sharing videos of suicides and murders on social media (like this story from this week). We’re all glad the woman who climbed the crane is safe this morning. But maybe next time let’s wait until we get a little more information before jumping to conclusions and posting online. NOW Magazine

Heineken Just Put Out The Antidote To That Pepsi Kendall Jenner Ad
Earlier this month, Pepsi tried to walk in step with the #Resistance, and ended up falling on its face. Hard. The company’s tone-deaf ad inspired such a seething backlash it was pulled almost instantly, and savagely parodied. Now Heineken has come along a couple weeks later with an ad that gets to the heart of political engagement in a straightforward way that makes Pepsi’s self-congratulatory ad seem even more embarrassing. Check out the ad here and Tweet at us your thoughts. Fast Company

Twitter Desperately Needed A Hit First-Quarter And Somehow Managed To Deliver
In an very un-Twitter move, the company completely beat out the increasing decline of its business that tech observers were expecting. This is a hugely positive sign for the company, which has seen continued bad news on the whole company’s operating front. Not only was it able to generate more money than expected, its user numbers also made a surprising spike. Twitter has been trying to curb the abuse problem on its platform lately while also making some changes to trim down the complex nature of the platform. TechCrunch
