Chinese social media giant, Weibo banned LGTBQ content
and caused a huge backlash. Following this, protests began and the hashtag #iamgay also started to trend. As per usual, the censors stepped in and hit that hashtag with the ban-hammer, too. Normally, this is where the story ends. However, this time, Weibo shortly announced that it is “no longer targeting gay content
” in response to the hashtag. Not only is this a massive (and rare) victory against state-sponsored censorship, it’s a powerful display of the voice of the Chinese LGBTQ community. Giving a platform to marginalized communities is EXACTLY what social is about.
