It seems to be that another day means another company coming under fire this month. The latest scandal revolves around Adidas sending out emails congratulating people on “surviving the Boston marathon”. On social media, customers quickly reminded the company about the real survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The sports apparel company quickly apologized, saying it was “incredibly sorry” for the “insensitive” subject line about Monday’s race. The posting of a video showing a 74-year-old man’s shooting death on Facebook is raising questions about whether social media sites and their users have a role to play in preventing real-world violence from finding an audience online. On Sunday a man claiming to be angry at a former girlfriend, shot and killed a randomly chosen victim. The shooter later posted footage of the killing on Facebook. The video of the slaying remained on Facebook for about three hours, prompting questions about why Facebook didn’t act more quickly to pull it down. Should it be up to Facebook users to police the content on the site? CBC
