Techstars Startup Digest Toronto
Locally curated talks, workshops, and other events for those interested in creating a startup, growing one, or who want to connect with startups in the Greater Toronto Area.
Good morning, Toronto startups and entrepreneurs! You may have noticed that the newsletter looks a little different this week. Techstars Startup Digests have moved to a new platform, which will hopefully serve you better. Same content, same curator, and with a different layout.
As with last week, our focus is support. Many startups are struggling, and there’s help, even if it’s only advice. There are more events after the newsletter.

Community Opportunities
If you’re interested in offering your support, the Prepr Network is hosting the Beyond COVID-19 Global Open Innovation Challenge. There are four open challenges: business, prevention, education, and community. Build a virtual team, create a project, and work towards a solution related to a challenge. You’ll also earn rewards while building your skills, and supplement your portfolio with a real-world project. You have until June 10 to work on your project pitches.
For those of you working on a product or service idea, gBETA Toronto’s accelerator is recruiting for their next program. They’re looking for startups in healthcare, IoT, and clean tech to join their free 7-week program — complete with mentorship, access to investors, and $1M+ in deals and perks. Don’t miss the June 5th application deadline!

Have a great week, and stay well!
Ian.

You’ll learn what to consider to minimize the risk of personal liability if your small business should ever declare bankruptcy. You may be concerned with liability for unpaid wages, whether any contracts could lead to personal exposure, directors liability for payroll deductions and HST, and avoiding personal liability if you have treated some creditors more favourably than others. Even if your business is healthy, make sure you’re operating it in a way to minimize any personal exposure or liability if the business ever experiences financial difficulty.

The current pandemic has drastically changed the funding landscape for startups, with implications far into the future once the dust has settled. In this webinar, we will be exploring the current VC climate and have a conversation looking into the future of how Venture Capital might evolve coming out of COVID.

This webinar will provide a brief overview on applying for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, Temporary Wage Subsidy for Employers and the Work-Sharing Program, as well as provide general business support.

Discover the untold stories about fundraising rounds, with firsthand accounts from people in the room. In each episode, you’ll hear from each side — the founder and the investor — about the process of closing a deal. You’ll also learn more about the ongoing relationships that drive businesses forward.
