Techstars Startup Digest Toronto

Locally curated talks, workshops, and other events for those interested in creating a startup, growing one, or who want to connect with startups in the Greater Toronto Area.

Hello Toronto startups and entrepreneurs! Although Toronto lacks the scale and size of major startup ecosystems south of the border, it’s still the continent’s fourth-largest and a success story that other cities would do well to emulate. We may not have the capital, but we have the talent, thanks to favourable immigration rules, and cheaper labour costs in part due to access to public healthcare.
If you’re working on products for the blockchain or using quantum computing, Creative Destruction Lab Toronto (CDL) has two streams available for you. Their Quantum Stream, which closes its applications on May 23, is a four-week intensive program, while the Blockchain Stream program, which stops accepting applications after June 6, is two weeks. Both programs are followed by five objective-setting sessions over eight and two months, respectively. Scroll down for more details.
As a reminder, two accelerators will stop accepting applications this week. If you’re a newcomer woman with an idea for a startup, get that idea into the Women’s Business Accelerator before end of day today. The LocoLAB Accelerator Program I included last week ends this Friday. Read on for more information.
Have a great week, and stay well!

Community Opportunities
Here are some upcoming deadlines for applying to accelerators, grants and funding, or other competitions. Don’t miss out! If you know of others, please submit any application deadlines and I’ll post them if they’re relevant.
Are you a newcomer woman with a business idea? The Women’s Business Accelerator is a free, online workshop series that will equip you with the tools you need to build a profitable business. In the WBA program, you’ll develop your idea and craft a business plan, receive coaching support to enhance your learning, network with other entrepreneurs and industry professionals, and practice and refine your pitching skills. Eligible applicants must be a permanent resident, convention refugee or live-in caregiver with a legal right to work in Canada, and have a business idea or be interested in starting a business in Canada.
Through a three-month intensive program in downtown Toronto, we support radical entrepreneurs as they develop and scale revolutionary companies. Participants in LocoLAB’s Accelerator Program gain access to experienced mentors and advisors, a collaborative office space, and a host of resources designed to support the growth of their startup. At LocoLAB, we believe in equal access to entrepreneurial support, uninfluenced by politics or education level. That’s why we offer independent, unbiased funding and resources to support the most creative minds and ventures. For each startup in the program, LocoLAB provides $35,000 CAD in pre-seed capital, in exchange for 1-3% equity. We look forward to welcoming our first cohort of entrepreneurs into our summer program, running from July through September 2022.
The Quantum Stream at Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) Toronto brings together entrepreneurs, investors, scientists in quantum technologies, and quantum technology partners to build ventures in the emerging domain of quantum computing, optimization, sensing and other applications of quantum technologies. CDL Quantum Stream involves an intensive four-week technical and business quantum bootcamp instructed by industry and academic leaders in quantum technologies and machine learning, followed by five objective-setting sessions over eight months. CDL Quantum startups work with mentors to sharpen objectives, prioritize time and resources, raise capital, and engage with experts working on the frontiers of research. CDL is a non-profit organization. There are no fees for participation and CDL does not take any equity.
The Blockchain Stream at Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) Toronto brings together experienced entrepreneurs, economists, and active investors to help scale ventures based around technologies underpinned by, or core to the advancement of, blockchain technology. Startups attend an intensive two-week virtual crypto-economics and business bootcamp in July instructed by industry and academic leaders in blockchain, crypto-economics, peer to peer networking, and entrepreneurship followed by five objective-setting sessions between October and June. CDL is a non-profit organization. There are no fees for participation and CDL does not take any equity.
BHive is an initiative powered by the City of Brampton with a goal to empower the next generation of innovators, accelerate their journey, and create a positive impact for the entrepreneur, economy, and community as a whole. The program has been strategically designed to ensure startups have everything they need to scale and grow. Successful applicants will have access to an unrivaled ecosystem and expertise to support exceptional founders in building successful companies. Our integrated approach involves thoughtfully designed programs, one-to-one mentorships, and access to our entire portfolio of service.
This program, delivered by Futurpreneur, will provide young, Black entrepreneurs age 18-39 across Canada with a comprehensive offering of $5,000–$60,000 in startup loan financing, as well as up to two years of mentorship, opportunities to engage with a national network of Black entrepreneurs, leaders and community organizations at a range of entrepreneurship events, and a variety of relevant tools and resources. Participants who are keen to scale their businesses even further will also be eligible for up to $40,000 in follow-on financing funded by RBC, based on the first two years of successful business performance.
At the Science Discovery Zone (SDZ) we help people take evidence-based approaches to test big ideas and discover new ventures. We aim to serve as a model for strong collaboration across all disciplines (not just the science ones) that fuels innovation and entrepreneurial discovery. What makes the SDZ stand out amongst other incubators are the unique services and opportunities we create for our community, which are geared towards fostering your goals and success!
