Locally curated talks, workshops, and other events for those interested in creating a startup, growing one, or who want to connect with startups in the Greater Toronto Area.
Good morning, Toronto startups and entrepreneurs! Ottawa, the GTHA, and the corridor to Kitchener-Waterloo might seem like the only places in southern Ontario where innovation is currently happening. There’s more beyond these cities. A few small towns are vying for the attention of startup founders: Collingwood, Cobourg, and Innisfil to name a few. It’s that last town which is the focus of the podcast Tech Town with Takara Small, which came out this past summer. If you’re interested in hearing startup stories outside the big cities, it’s a great listen.
In Tech Town, Takara Small explores the startup scene in the town of Innisfil, whose “leaders are employing progressive policies such as paying taxes with BitCoin, a futuristic town planning project, a custom accelerator for talent and more.” Innisfil also famously replaced its public transit system with Uber. Ryerson’s DMZ is working with the town to attract global talent, and join already-established startups re-inventing food delivery, farming, transportation and healthcare.
On a related note, last week’s Ontario budget included $3.75M “to support work by the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) and the Toronto Business Development Centre to attract more international startups to Ontario”. Their initial focus will be on India. If you know someone living there who is interested in expanding their operations to Ontario, some incentives could soon be available to them.
Community Opportunities
Here are some upcoming deadlines for applying to accelerators, grants and funding, or other competitions. Don’t miss out! If you know of others, please submit any application deadlines and I’ll post them if they’re relevant.
