Things I Wish I Knew When I Started in PPC, It's Not You, It's Google Ads, PPC Live UK (Highlight on Diversity) & more.

Welcome to our ninth edition of the #PPCChat Roundup Newsletter - your fortnightly update on the latest of the #PPCChat Roundup podcast, interesting read in relation to the episodes, London’s only locally run and organized PPC-focused event (PPC Live UK), and more on what’s going on in my (Anu) world of Paid Search.
All the work you see here and below, I do on a voluntary basis because I have so much love for our community so if you would like to support me - why don’t you buy me a coffee(basically what I survive on 😄).

#PPCChat Roundup Podcast🎙
In the last two weeks, we have had a couple more great chats about the PPC industry. On the 2nd of August, we talked about things we wished we knew when we started PPC. We know that in the PPC industry keeps growing and there are more entry-level people joining the industry consistently. So I think this was a great chat to share things we think it’s best for them to remember as they start their career. A few of my favorites were:
Google Ads Editor is your friend:
Dylan Online
A3. How much time Google Ads editor will save you.

Spent about 6-8 months without it and I’m so glad I found it 😅

Don’t over-segment Facebook campaigns:
Ashton Clarke
A4: That oversegmenting Facebook campaigns/ad sets can lead to lower performance. We've seen their algorithm work better when targeting is consolidated, which goes against how I usually approach search campaigns (though that is also changing).
Don’t be afraid to spend money:
Fraser Andrews
A2: As bad as it sounds its so important to detach yourself from budgets and spending money. Early on I felt so pressured about spending peoples money but found myself not only damaging results but also harming client relations #PPCChat
On the 9th, we then had another fantastic chat led, not by Julie this time but by another seasoned and friendly member of our community, Amalia Fowler on a topic that this time was for everyone - It’s not you, it’s Google. There’s no way anyone who has worked in PPC for more than a few years now, hasn’t implemented something they knew for sure was the right thing to do - but it just didn’t work. It’s not you!! It’s most likely Google changing something on us overnight. So we did an up-to-date - what IS working in Google for different product types, industries, audiences, and more. A few of my favorite shares were:
PMax is so uncertain:
Fraser Andrews
A1: The general uncertainty and lack of information around Performance Max has been my main irk. It can also feel at times that products are being rushed out before being fully completed (PMAX again) that being said @MenachemAni has been a great resource for this #PPCChat
Loss of search query hasn’t been all bad:
Doug R Thomas, Esq.
A2. Lead Gen & SMBs: For me it's led to simpler campaign structures. Combined with automated bidding, it's kinda a godsend. No need to duplicate match types, no trawling through single-data points to try and make up data stories.

Responsive Search Ads (RSA) isn’t working for everyone:
Lawrence Chasse
A4: Yes w/a lot of the accounts. Some accounts you cannot, because of the lack of control where your ads show up or for what they show up for.

Google wants this to work, so where it is viable, we are trying to make it work. I have seen some good successes.

I just love not just the feeling of it’s not you but also that you are not alone. I know sometimes it’s not the best to just be part of a community that all think the same (well we don’t really). But sometimes you do want to hear that others’ experiences have been very similar to yours and that you aren’t going crazy.
Please do go check out those episodes - there are lots to learn from them. If you have listened to more than 30 seconds of them, why don’t you take 5 seconds of your time to leave a rating/review?

PPC Live UK🗣
We are fully in preparation mode for our second PPC Live UK which is going to happen on the 29th of September. Three fantastic speakers - consisting of 1 first time on a speaking stage, another 2nd time on a speaking stage, and someone who is actually an SEO expert - meaning we raise the importance of breaking down silos that there are between channels. I am passionate about diversity and it’s clear that this is a practice that hasn’t been achieved well enough by the current marketing conferences industry:
David Herrmann
The same people speak at every marketing conference.
My reply:
Anu aka PPC Live UK founder 🎙️🗣️
@herrmanndigital Riiight??!!! I am determined to help fix this with @PPCLiveUK. Trying to get as many 1st/2nd time speakers at every event. Last one (July 28th), nailed that. Nailing it again in September! 🙌🏾
We are going to have one name who is a seasoned speaker on many stages - Rand Fishkin. Most significantly, he is the CEO and Founder of Sparktoro an audience researching tool. With the future of a lot of automation and data privacy, knowing your audience and building on that 1st party data is going to be how you’ll stand out competitively in your market.
With Rand, because this is such a big deal and because I want to ensure the information he gives is only that which you will find relevant, his session will be purely a Q&A session. So please submit the questions you would love to ask him here.
Tickets to September’s PPC Live UK are £15 because of the massive value this event is obviously going to provide. Get your tickets now to not be disappointed - it’s bound to sell out again.
