THCB Reader -- May 1, 2021

THCB Reader

May 1 · Issue #111 · View online

Everything you always wanted to know about the health care system. But were afraid to ask.

This week on THCB Reader, Saurabh Jha examines the market forces behind vaccine passports and steps towards normalcy and Kim Bellard remarks on “million dollar blocks”’ and what this reveals about data visualization and decision making.
In case you missed it, we hit TWO hundred episodes of Health in 2 Point 00 this week. To celebrate, we had a special guest edition with Glen Tullman, Eugene Borukhovic, Lisa Suennen & Ian Morrison, as well as plenty of BS from us two regulars! We didn’t stop there, though - we have two more episodes of Health in 2 Point 00 on top of that, featuring an all-European episode complete with my attempts at various accents. On WTF Health, Jess DaMassa interviews Sharecare’s Jeff Arnold on their upcoming SPAC IPO and how he plans to make Sharecare even more successful than that other health care business he founded, WebMD.
Meanwhile, on Thursday’s episode of THCB Gang, I was joined regulars, employer health expert Jennifer Benz (@jenbenz); patient safety expert and all around wit Michael Millenson (@MLMillenson); WTF Health host & Health IT girl Jessica DaMassa (@jessdamassa); & Consumer advocate & CTO of Carium Health, Lygeia Ricciardi (@Lygeia). Click here to see it.
And of course to listen any time you can subscribe to #THCBGang and #Healthin2Point00 podcasts with an easy click on Apple or Spotify.

In health care tidbits this week, let’s talk sports scores! This week:
New Jersey 93 - Florida 42
I asked on Twitter, what’s the sport? One wag suggested it was dog racing!
Close – but the answer is, of course, Medicare Fraud!
Last week there were two cases of Medicare fraud. $92m for unnecessary DME in New Jersey. The gang there bribed telemedicine companies, and sent out unneeded DMW. A mere $42m for undelivered allergy shots in FL, where the owner bought himself a $3m yacht. These sentences haven’t been handed down yet but unluckily for these guys Trump isn’t around to pardon them.
Last week there was a case where a US army contractor sold a truck in Afghanistan for $150k and just got 4 years. They should have tried health care instead!

April 29, Saurabh Jha
By censoring content, Facebook and Twitter showed that freedom can more efficiently be curtailed by the private sector. It may very well be the private sector which demands vaccine passports, which begs two questions – why and why not? When individual preferences clash with groups preferences, markets segment, which is why we have budget airlines. Vaccine passports may also be a consequence of such tension. They’re not the key to reopening the economy. Rather, they may be the result of their phased re-opening.
April 27, Kim Bellard
Since he first heard about them, Kim has been fascinated, and dismayed, by the concept of “million dollar blocks.” The term refers to city blocks for which society spends over a million dollars annually to incarcerate residents of that block. What does this say about the value of data visualization, and how can we draw parallels to healthcare in terms of highlighting existing areas of need?
