In this week’s THCB Reader, Mike Magee argues that health care needs its heroes, and Kim Bellard looks at Jack Dorsey, Bitcoin and synthetic biology to draw some lessons for health care’s future. We have lots of interview content this week for you, too. On Health in 2 Point 00, we cover a deal so big that it brought me out of vacation. Jess DaMassa on WTF Health chats with Larry Leisure of Chicago Pacific Founders to talk about hot areas for investment, and grills SonderMind’s CEO Mark Frank following the mental health startup’s $150 million raise. On THCB Spotlight, I have two interviews as well - first with CJ Wilson, CEO of MyHealth.US, and with Marta Zanchi, Founder & Partner at Nina Ventures in Barcelona. No #THCBGang this past week as I was on vacation, but to listen any time you can subscribe to #THCBGang and #Healthin2Point00 podcasts with an easy click on Apple or Spotify.

For my health care tidbits this week, I’m just going to leave this tweet here, celebrating that the worst for-profit hospital chain offender in suing its patients has decided to stop–well at lesst for the really poor ones. And yes I meant to say “As of this year” not “of this year” but, hey, I was on vacation!

We should all laud the generosity of @ -- of this year it's decided to only "take patients to court only if they make at least twice the federal poverty level — or about $52,000 annually for a family of four" What magnamanity!

July 26, Mike Magee Health care needs its heroes, argues Mike in this article. Those who train doctors and nurses and health professionals, who lead research and discovery, who administer health care institutions, need to understand the fundamental challenge in “the hero’s quest.” As Joseph Campbell stated, “Is the system going to eat you up and relieve you of your humanity, or are you going to be able to use the system to human purposes?” July 27, Kim Bellard What can health care learn from Jack Dorsey and Bitcoin? Kim investigates health issues we can solve at the foundational level and argues we should use technology to decentralize, and to distribute power to the masses. That offers the promise of taking control from the traditional healthcare structures – not relying on hospitals, health insurance companies, or even medical professionals.
