On today’s edition of the THCB Reader: I comment on the recent IPOs of multiple health tech companies, which is causing a shift in the industry and exposing the real problems in health care today; Deven McGraw & Vince Kuraitis add another piece to their new series on THCB, addressing the pending federal privacy & data protection legislation in Congress to date; and Joe Grace introduces the notion that Amazon may lead the way to a single-payer health care system in the US. In video, Jess speaks to Mike McSherry, CEO of Xealth, about its digital prescribing & analytics platform that integrates into EMRs - Matthew Holt

I lay down the definitive explanation for what’s going on in health tech, using the IPOs this week to explain the last decade of health tech evolution. Hint: these IPOs demonstrate a significant shift in the health care ecosystem, telling us about the major problems in the industry today. So the real question that emerges is what is the future of health care delivery? And who is in charge?

The buzz around federal privacy legislation continues, but as of yet there appear to be no proposals or bills that have emerged as the lead bills. In the first installment of THCB’s new series, “The Health Data Goldilocks Dilemma: Privacy? Sharing? Both?”, Deven McGraw and Vince Kuraitis give an update on federal privacy legislation, breaking it down into comprehensive and focused bills.

With Amazon’s buying power, scale, and capabilities, the e-commerce giant could create a health payer offering that could render the need for a single payer system moot. Bernie Sanders may be right when he argues that access to quality health care is a basic human right. But given all the roadblocks, lobbying and politics blocking the way to a government single payer system, it just may be delivered by Jeff Bezos rather than Uncle Sam.
