As a child Kathleen Zellner taught herself judo and jujitsu. This came in handy when aged 8 she beat up a teenage boy who had killed a family pet. That’s not even the most surprising thing in this Esquire back story… just don’t read the last part if you’re still making your way through Making A Murderer Part 2 which, if you’re still wondering, is very much worth your time.
If you think Carly Rae Jepsen is just a one hit wonder responsible for ‘Call Me Maybe’, hang your head in shame and spend the weekend listening to this playlist. She is actually criminally underrated and among the best pop stars in the world. Her new single 'Party For One’, an ode to staying in and self-pleasure, provides further evidence of this.
Alice Jones spent SEVEN HOURS (!!) finding out. This particular observation made me chuckle: Claudia is very funny and tells us she is wearing “eight pairs of Spanx” and a “very itchy” dress from Zara. Tess asks us about the temperature.
Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One, tomorrow at 7:05pm
Ok, so technically it is a BAFTA-winning documentary but the point remains that Ambulance is wonderfully made television. Each episode focuses on a single 12-hour shift for a team of emergency call handlers and the paramedics on the ground. While there are upsetting moments, each episode turns into an uplifting glimpse at the best of humanity.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the show I have been asked about the most this week. Full disclosure, I have only seen one episode so far BUT here’s my take: It’s an intriguing and mature drama/horror hybrid with a strong cast and characters. A bit slow in places but that may be helpful to give you time to process. The main thing is you need to forget all about the 90s Melissa Joan-Hart show, they are very different beasts indeed.
Jair Bolsonaro’s rise to power in Brazil is shocking and terrifying. This episode of the Guardian’s new podcast Today in Focus sheds some light on how it happened. Some of the stories in this are completely bonkers. Which is quite entertaining, and then desperately chilling when you realise it’s all real.
Best of October
Another month has come and gone and since several of you are new here, I thought a roundup of October’s highlights would be helpful…
