It’s great to be back in your inbox. And today, I’m not here alone, but brought some fascinating company. 
Meet some of the creators I’ve had the most memorable conversations with recently. We’ve published these in full as part of our Creator Highlights series.
In three excerpts, learn about newsletter structure, the intimacy of email, and how to overcome the fear of getting started:

Caroline Criado Perez on the fear of hitting “Send” for the very first time
If you don’t know Caroline, you really should change that. She’s an author and a movement-builder. Her book and newsletter Invisible Women have educated many of us about the shocking and — to some — surprising ways women are systematically disadvantaged in a world designed for men. 
She seems fearless. But she wasn’t fearless at all when she was about to hit “Send” on her first newsletter issue: 
I was really nervous about writing my first newsletter. It felt like the stakes were absurdly high as I had Tweeted about the idea before writing my first edition, so I already had hundreds of subscribers before I’d written a single word! I was scared of letting all these people down who had all this faith in me. I was scared of embarrassing myself.
So how did I get over the fear? In two ways that I have actually used pretty much forever. First: I just did it. The only way of getting over your fear of doing something is to do it.
And the other thing I did was just to be honest about how nervous I was. I didn’t pretend I was a professional newsletter writer or that I had any idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I had more to share, and that there was this amazing burgeoning community of people who were hopefully up for going on a journey with me. And so off we went!

Kevin Roose on the unique structure of newsletter audiences
Kevin is a tech writer at The New York Times and a great Twitter follow follow. He’s used to massive audiences, of course. So one thing that is true for many of us, is true especially for him: Newsletter audiences tend to be smaller than audiences on social and other media. 
I loved what he said when I asked him about this disparity:
Honestly, I dig the disparity! I’d obviously love for my newsletter to blow up and be read by millions of people, but right now, it’s pretty great to have a smaller space for public writing that has an explicit opt-in requirement.
It means I’m writing exclusively for people who have chosen to keep up with my work in the last 3-4 months, whereas with Twitter, I’m writing for those people plus all of my social and professional acquaintances, plus the people who heard me on a podcast or liked some dumb joke I made in 2014.
It feels a little like starting over at a new school — I can be goth if I want to, mom!

Matt Navarra on the importance of structure
Matt started his newsletter only around one year ago, but he has already grown it into a little bit of an empire. Not only his own Geekout newsletter grown, but Matt has also invited two new newsletters to be published as part of the Geekout brand (more on this in the New & Noteworthy section below).
One thing I admire about the Geekout newsletter is its disciplined structure that helps readers find what they need quickly. Unsurprisingly, a lot of thought has gone into that:
The newsletter format is shaped like a funnel. It starts very wide with a summary of the big stuff I spotted that week, plus lots of light-hearted and fun stuff to draw people in without it feeling like a heavy read. As you scroll through, the newsletter goes from talking in detail about the biggest news stories at the start, to a quick link list of all the other stuff people may want to skim or bookmark for later.
We intentionally built in sections which would appeal to advertisers, such as the ’Tool of the Week’ or the ‘Hidden Gem’ spots.
I want people to open Geekout each week and feel like it’s a fun read with a sense of personality and humor, but jam-packed with useful links and insights readers can benefit from in their professional life.
