We said goodbye to the high schoolers and college students we’ve been teaching for the summer this past week. What an experience! I feel like they were able to walk away armed with foundational knowledge on personal branding, marketing, data and research, emerging technologies, and many potential career ideas.
This week, I have also spent some time prepping for an upcoming side hustle talk (8/18 at 11 am CST!) for the National Urban League Jobs Network career series. Sometimes the most challenging part about starting a side hustle is taking those first steps. So here are some tips I plan to share next week for getting started (one of which I included as a tweet in the #reads section).
  • Get clear on your why. Are you trying to earn extra money, pursue a passion, launch a business?
  • Figure out what you can offer: What can you talk about all day? Who are the peeps you want to help? What would someone pay you $50/hour to do?
  • Make time: Identify your existing commitments and schedule side hustle time. Then, see if you can use some of your high-energy time for your business.
  • Start experimenting: Tell your friends, share on social media, and take on a guinea pig client or two.
  • Make time for self-care to help prevent burnout.
  • Celebrate the baby steps, and remember, YOU get to define success!
I have learned many of those lessons from working with side hustlers over the years and throughout my journey. Anything you would add to the list?
On to the picks!
P.S. What can I do/create/offer to make your life easier? Hit reply and let me know. It’ll help me do some planning over the coming weeks.

  • 📚. Reading: The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea.  Ever have a book keep showing up in your world? Go-Giver is one of mine. My boss lent it to me (thanks, Cecelia), and it was an excellent read. Most folks identify as go-getters. This book invites us to be a giving person who adds value to other people’s lives. There are five laws told in story form. My fave: “The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.”
  • 📺. Watching: Ted Lasso. Sooo late to this party as usual but found myself binging season one last weekend. It’s so wholesome and so inspiring. Biscuits with the boss are my favorite session. ☕️ Also, there is something about goldfish that’ll just stay with you. Trust me. ⚽️
  • 📝. Tool: I grabbed this $39 lifetime deal on AppSumo this week, and I have to say I’m a fan. Officially it’s called an “AI-powered content generation tool.” First, you enter your company name and a brief description. From there, you can generate tweet ideas, blog post outlines, social media posts. I already used it to create a few post ideas that sound like something I would write. Can’t wait to dive into it even more over the coming weeks.

Dear side hustler,

Remember that your day job is not the enemy. It helps you with your bills and gives you time and space to experiment with your business.

And hey, it's also OK to like your day job.
