CPS drops its mask mandate, and an update on a principal-LSC dispute

Chicago Sun-Times Education This Week
Education This Week is our weekly recap of the biggest news in education affecting the Chicago area, Illinois, the region and the nation. Today’s edition was written by Nader Issa, the Sun-Times’ education beat reporter. Follow him on Twitter here.

Good morning!
It has somehow been almost six whole months since Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez took this job, and there has been an Omicron wave and subsequent decline, a fight between CPS and CTU, more politics bleeding into the classroom, continued transportation struggles and a major district leadership shakeup.
Time flies when you’re having fun? I guess?
Anyway, Martinez is reflecting on his first 161 days in the CEO’s office — and looking forward at his plans for the district — at the Economic Club of Chicago this afternoon.
I’ll be there and will have coverage later in the day, which you can find at the Sun-Times education home page.
But while we listen to Martinez’s thoughts, I’m interested in hearing yours. What do you think of his first half-year leading the district? Any successes that stood out to you? Any failures? Send them my way and we might feature your views in a future newsletter.
Until next week,
Nader Issa, Sun-Times education reporter
