So I was invited to Chicago to speak about retail and offer some nuggets (not chicken BTW) to the assembled royalty of retail. Echoes of my 1996 utterance of Amazon becoming the ‘Wal-Mart of the Web’ reminded me that molasses moves faster than big box retailers.
While they may have expected talk of Big Data, personalized shopping, etc. the real issues in retail today have to do with the “in person” experience.
Why is Amazon opening real stores? How did Apple beat Best Buy? Underlying these mysteries (at least to most folks) are the few words I shared in my Keynote presentation.
Lesson: you have to be able to re-imagine any industry. Look fresh at everything. Every industry is in flux and up for grabs everyday. Creativity is more important than capital. Imagine daily.
