The gender wars of household chores: a feminist comic
A female friend of mine one day told me that when she was away on the business trip, she had more work when she came back because although her partner and her shared quite equally in household chores, she remained the “boss of the house”, and things did go into disarray when she was away. Not so with her male colleagues, who would go home to neat homes. I first saw this comic in its original French version. If you’ve missed it, do go and read it. It sheds light on all the unrecognised work (you might have heard me mention “emotional labour”) women do. And women are just as complicit as men in perpetuating these social roles. Awareness is a first step. Raising our children differently and modelling for them is another. Calling out everyday sexism and “genderification” in the world around is yet another.
