Hey Sports Tech Fans,
It’s that time of year again where the Premier League goes into overdrive with games on seemingly every day for the month of December.
Amazon has had the rights to two complete match weeks, the first of which was completed this week.
As eager as I am to try the service, since I live in Ireland I can’t get access to the Amazon offering.
But I do have a friend living in the UK who was able to screenshot some of the interactive components.
For the longest time, we have talked about the second screen economy growing at an absurd rate as sports fans look to augment the content they are consuming.
We have seen live scoring apps blow up to the point where they are now live-streaming apps like Livescore is in Ireland with Champions League, Serie A, and Portuguese league games.
This is the first I have seen for soccer at least that goes a step in the opposite direction, to a single screen experience.
The user experience has improved considerably and now includes highlights on a timeline to allow users to catch up on events that they might have missed or if they want to relieve the goal that was scored, no need to wait for the highlight reels after the game has ended.
This is seen as a huge market for both streaming services and more traditional linear broadcast TV providers. BT Sports have won rave reviews and awards for their app that provides a similar feature.
Sky Sports too have their own across multiple sports that allow users to catch up on events.
Below in the steaming wars section, there is another development in this space from Amazon’s Prime Video for NFL’s Thursday Night Football.
As a partner of the NFL, Amazon have been provided so-called “next gen stats” that are displayed on top of the broadcast. There is also a website that is worth checking out if you are an NFL fan
The latest thing to be added to Amazon’s X-Ray feature is to allow fans to participate in real-time polls while watching Thursday Night Football, as well as view stats in real-time.
The future of consuming live sports content is changing and before long every sports fan will have a lot of interactive features at their fingertips allowing them to participate in the conversation around the live-action and to consume the data that each game produces.
Elsewhere the term Metaverse is fast becoming the term of 2021 as Manchester City announces plans for the Metaverse with Sony.
Have a great sporting weekend,
