Hey Sports Tech Fans,
The Euros are over and it was a rollercoaster of a game that ultimately went the way of the Italians after a penalty shootout.
There was ugly scenes before the game as fans without tickets tried to gain access to the stadium and it appears more than a few managed to get in.
The English FA will be charged by UEFA on numerous offences by fans, so there is a lot more to come here in the aftermath of a thrilling tournament.
Even worse was the racist abuse leveled at the players who missed their penalties as they did their best to stand up and take a penalty in high pressure moment to try and claim victory for their nation.
Anyone can miss a penalty, show me any penalty taker in the world and I will show you someone who has missed one in their career.
The conditional support some fans showed is disgusting. Fair enough people were upset at getting so close and failing at the final hurdle but the immediate focus by some fans on race just isnt acceptable in sport.
It remains to be seen what punishment will be dished out to those responsible and what ramifications the ease of social media abuse will have.
It will put a huge dent in the England and Ireland’s World Cup 2030 bid.
As an Irish man and fan, it is likely our only hope to host a tournament of this importance so I hope the issues like we saw with fans rushing the stadium can be better prepared for as I would love to Ireland play in a World Cup on home soil.
In other news, Apple might be entering the live sports scene as they are in early stages of discussions with the NFL about a streaming deal.
This would be a game changer in more ways than one and if it goes ahead I will do a deeper dive on the contract.
But long story short, Apple have the money, their streaming service needs more content, it needs live content and the NFL is the biggest game in town when it comes to the US market.
The Olympics kick off in a weeks time. Below I have included a video from the excellent Youtuber, Wendover, on the logistics of the Olympics and the details included in the deal to put on the biggest sports event in the world.
Have a great weekend,
