Hey Sports Tech Fans,
I hope all my American readers had a great 4th of July weekend.
It’s a quieter week in terms of sports tech news than other weeks but it was far from a quiet week.
The Olympics will be officially behind closed doors which is a shame as fans really do add to the dynamic of live sporting events but even more so the Olympics given the truly global nature of the games.
This will have a series of knock-on effects. Some athletes have already pulled out of the games because of the lack of fans and the measures in place in Japan as Tokyo enters a state of emergency.
There is a great piece below on how TV-only games will have a negative impact on the TV broadcasters themselves as TV viewing numbers fell dramatically with no fans in the stadiums despite other streaming and gaming viewing numbers increasing massively when people were in lockdown.
The games kick off in just two weeks so the priority to keep everyone safe is of the utmost importance but sports lovers around the world will be disappointed at not seeing the games at their best.
Have a great sporting weekend,
