Hey Sports Tech Fans,
A super busy week as the Euro 2020 serves up some of the best tournament soccer that I can remember. It’s been a fascinating experience so far and with 8 teams left it is anyone’s trophy.
This week there is a lot of news on students athletes in the US now being able to earn money while they play college sports thanks to a change in the rules and laws governing the matter.
There is also a lot of news in regards to sponsorship, not least the news that Tiktok will be the main sponsor of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney owned Wrexham.
Wrexham might be unknown to almost everyone before the shock news of the takeover during 2020 but the value add that the Hollywood-based owners can deliver to the club is priceless and gives them a huge edge over their competition in the 5th tier of the English football pyramid.
The reasoning I shared at the time of the takeover was that a single deal with Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, etc. for a fly on the wall documentary series would bring in more money than the club would likely receive from all gate receipts and sponsorship.
While that remains the case, you would imagine Tiktok are playing multiples of previous Wrexham sponsors for the simple fact of the value the two owners bring to the table.
The two owners joined Tiktok after the deal was done and announced the deal there whilst also posting content that will go down well with TikTok users.
The value is there too for TikTok as they look to become even more active in the sports space after their title sponsorship of Euro 2020.
It will be a fascinating watch as the story continues to develop and I would imagine we will be able to see it close as the club grows both on and off the pitch.
With Wrexham being from Wales but playing in the English football pyramid after an effective merging on the FA’s, will we be watching Wrexham in the Premier League in 10 years?
Have a great sporting weekend,
