Hey Sports Tech Fans,
From the community this week, is the announcement of the Techstars SportsTech Indy new cohort announcement.
A few weeks ago I spoke with Andrew Hippert the Program Manager and got a sneak peak at the upcoming batch.
There are some great teams across a number of important subcategories of Sports Tech that we cover here each week.
I’m delighted that and Irish and Northern startups are part of the cohort this year following on from last year having Irish representation as well.
I will hopefully be working closely with the teams this year to share news and insights into the businesses as they progress through the program which kicked off this week with Mentor Madness!
Apples WWDC developer conference this week and they unveiled a FaceTime integration for watch together features called SharePlay.
The service will allow friends and families to watch content in sync with each other with a number of sports apps included in the initial release when iOS 15 launches in September.
Apple might not have entered the sports streaming wars as of yet but this is a fantastic way to enter the market and leveraging the live sports content of others to be consumed in the Apple ecosystem.
They also announced that non Apple device owners can now join FaceTime calls but I don’t think these users will be able to enjoy the SharePlay services.
A story I forgot to share a couple of weeks ago is Livescore’s acquisition of Champions League rights for the Irish market.
This is a non-exclusive agreement with national broadcasters share a portion of the games and subscription service BT Sports retaining all games.
It remains to be seen what the presentation of the games will be like, but since the service will be free I would expect it will come without a studio presence with pundits and analysis.
Dublin is somewhat of a hub for out of stadium commentary which has become widely adopted since covid, where commentators are essentially in a booth commentating over the live feed.
I have spoken at length about non exclusive rights deals and I expect it to continue, especially with app services getting some rights with traditional TV companies providing a more polished offering.
Have a great sporting weekend and enjoy EURO 2020 which kicks off this evening!
