Hey Sports Tech Fans,
Our Reddit community has tripled in the last 3 months, from a very most 185 to over 600. You can check it out here:
La Liga have had a very busy week signing up new rights deals across Europe and the US.
For a long time I have argued that La Liga should look to change its US partner as its availability in US households is only 14 million, while the Premier League is (or at least was until streaming showed up) available in 114 million.
That sheer scale difference has been an unmovable obstacle for La Liga as they look to the US for growth.
After posting last week’s newsletter, the story broke of La Liga buying out BeIN for the final three years of their deal.
They have this week announced an 8-year deal with ESPN.
The majority of games will be on ESPN+, the streaming service but I would expect major games to be on ESPN as well as La Liga will look for massive growth under this new deal.
ESPN+ subscribers are at about the 13 million mark, which is under what BeIN can provide, but when you add in ESPN cable TV channels, you have an immediate increase in distribution.
When you add in coverage and highlights being available to Sports Center the defacto sports news show in the US, the increase in awareness in the general public will be massive.
It’s a shame peak Messi and Ronaldo weren’t on ESPN and as I think those two would have captured the imaginations of US fans who are currently lukewarm on soccer.
The next 8 years promise to be massive for La Liga in the US.
Have a great sporting weekend,
