Surge capacity is a collection of adaptive systems — mental and physical — that humans draw on for short-term survival in acutely stressful situations, such as natural disasters. But natural disasters occur over a short period, even if recovery is long. Pandemics are different — the disaster itself stretches out indefinitely.
Since February, as the global economy collapsed under the weight of the coronavirus pandemic, millions of novices, armed with $1,200 stimulus checks and nothing much to do, have begun trading via Silicon Valley upstart Robinhood—the phone-friendly discount brokerage founded in 2013.
I often get introduced to people looking to make the jump into startups and Silicon Valley. This is the reading list I send them. It’s not meant to be comprehensive. Rather, it’s meant to be a primer for many of the popular concepts and jargon you will hear working at a startup.
