When and where do you wear a mask? / Do you shop in grocery stores, or order online? / Would you dine inside a restaurant? Outside? Do you get takeout? / Do you go to friends’ homes for dinner, or have friends to your house, or see them in other ways? / Would you go work out at a gym? Swim in a pool? Run? Walk?
In digital conversations, participants only get feedback from people who join the fray. They receive no signal about how the silent onlookers perceive their dialogue. In fact, they don’t receive much signal that onlookers observed the conversation at all. Digital spaces generally have no equivalent of a disapproving glare.
After a week of deflecting their criticism, the company is taking a new, apologetic stance. It comes after the former employees blasted Pinterest in tweets that claimed the social media firm had discriminated against them and was insensitive to its Black workers, even as it professed to support Black Lives Matter.
