Welcome to Week 5 of the COVID-19 quarantine! Since SCI sent staff home to work in response to federal and state guidelines, the effort to defend the freedom to hunt has only cranked up! An all-new “virtual world tour” gets information directly to chapters, the Hunter Advocacy Action Center has registered tens of thousands of new advocates and Hunter Information Services has published 34 coronavirus advisories in 30 days. Wisconsin Gray Wolf Hunt Could Be Making A Comeback
Gray wolves in Wisconsin are considered a conservation success story. The wolf is native to the Great Lakes and other parts of the U.S., but by the 1950s, the population was teetering on extinction. The gray wolf was placed on the federal endangered species list in 1975. By 2012, its numbers had rebounded and the gray wolf was taken off the list, although a judge later put the wolves in the Great Lakes states back on the endangered species list.
If U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were to remove wolves from the list again, Wisconsin law dictates that the state’s annual hunting season would resume.

San Angelo Names Youth Pathfinder Recipient, Knox Archer (center)
San Angelo Names Youth Pathfinder Recipient
Knox Karcher has been named the recipient of the Youth Pathfinder Program for the SCI San Angelo Chapter. Knox is the son of Cody and Janet Karcher and a 4th grader in San Angelo. His parents recognized Knox was having difficulty during his developmental years. Muscular Dystrophy was ruled out and he began a rehabilitation program to aid development of his walking and other physical abilities. He was later diagnosed with a possible dopamine deficiency. Despite it all, Knox has overcome these early age obstacles and is looking forward to an axis deer hunt through the Pathfinder program. Chapter President Jimmy Fontenot is donating the taxidermy for his trophy and Jack & Kim Graves of J’s Deer Processing is donating the processing. The hunt will take place at the JL Bar Ranch.

This week Philip Glass visits with host Chip Hunnicutt about starring in the 2018 documentary, “TROPHY”. The film follows Glass, a lifelong hunter and a Texas-based sheep breeder, in his pursuit of The Big Five alongside the story of an outfitter and a private rhino breeder as they each deliver their unique sides of the story of hunting. The film is available to view on Netflix.
