By Musician Spotlights • Issue #34 • View online
To celebrate the official International Cello Day we’re spotlighting our Principal Cello, Lisa!

Question 1: Could you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Lisa Truelove has lived in Ashland, Oregon since the fall of 1988, when she moved here to perform with the Rogue Valley Symphony and the Rogue Valley Symphony Chamber Players, a group that was active from 1988-2017. A member of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, she has also performed with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Northwest Bach Ensemble in Newport and Ashland, the SyZyGy new music ensemble in Ashland, and often with the North State Symphony in Chico & Redding, California. Lisa maintains a private cello studio in her home, and performs cello/piano recitals with her husband Stephen, including many over the years in Gold Beach, her favorite Oregon vacation spot.
Question 2: What brought or inspired you to pursue cello? If you’d like to share one of your favorite pieces of music as well, I’d like to know!
At age 11 my father gave me an LP with Jacqueline DuPre playing the Elgar Cello Concerto. She was my inspiration to pursue cello as a career.
Question 3: What do you enjoy most about being with the Rogue Valley Symphony?
I love sitting with my team of cellists, surrounded by all the other sections, and leading the cellists.
Question 4: What do you do when you’re not playing music i.e. what are your hobbies or interests?
I teach private cello lessons in my home studio to children and adults. I also write poetry, take long walks with my husband and dog Lia, consider myself a pretty good cook, and enjoy making homemade greeting cards that I send to family and friends.
Question 5: Finally, one unusual fact, story, or tidbit about you or your instrument?
I play an 1868 French Bernadel cello made in Paris, which I bought in Albuquerque. It’s been my constant companion since 1983.
