I’m writing this newsletter from Shenzhen where I moved in September for my new role with French Tech.
I find this city fascinating. No other city has grown that fast in history ; from 30,000 to 14 millions people in just over 30 years.
The newly borne city is home of global-software-company Tencent (WeChat 980 millions users, market cap US$500 billion in Nov. 2017) and home of the largest telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei ( 华为) founded by Ren Zhengfei (任正非), a former engineer of the People’s Liberation Army.
The former fishing village was dubbed “The Silicon Valley of Hardware” by Wired magazine.

My First 30 Days with French Tech
Part of my job at la French Tech is to draft a roadmap for the next few months here in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, hence the reflection on what has been done over the last few years and what could be done in the future ; and its role in today’s connection economy.
Nicolas Colin: Nicolas Colin: Thought-Provoking Essays on the Digital Economy
As I spend more time talking about « startups », « innovation » and « ecosystems » ; I invested some time to understand what this is really about.
The essays of Nicolas Colin on the digital economy have been incredibly insightful.

Seth Godin: the Connection Economy
Some of my inspiration lately also come from the work of Seth Godin ; in this video below, he depicts the shift from the industrial economy to the connection economy:

And in this podcast he explains how you can position your business or startup to build the most valuable asset: a community.

Takeaways from Web Summit & Mars Summit
Al Gore's keynote at Web Summit, Novembre 2017
Al Gore's keynote at Web Summit, Novembre 2017
  • Al Gore says there is a huge business opportunity for tech entrepreneurs to tackle climate crisis:
“My purpose here is to recruit you to be part of the solution to the climate crisis. You can have a bigger impact than practically any other group in the entire world.”

Donations I Made and the Rescind of Net Neutrality
At a time when net neutrality (i.e. the free and open internet) is under serious threat, I made some donations to organizations that strive to make the internet a better place: Wikipedia and Mozilla.
Thanks for scrolling/skimming all the way thru. :)
I’ll send #3 of this newsletter in a couple of months, in the meantime you can engage with me on Twitter.
