here’s your weekly dose of treats 💌
a weekly list of goodies, ideas, pieces of research, principles, models, and other random stuff curated by Robert

fiery stuff I've been ingesting
  1. Musk gets Twitter for $44 billion, to cheers and fears of ‘free speech’ plan.
  2. The Delta Force Romanian team won the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics championship. FIRST Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and program robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
  3. Why Chinese culture has not conquered us all.
  4. 82% of Verified TikTok Professionals in the U.S. are Looking for a New Job
  5. The path to better thinking through puzzles and riddles
  6. 1800s Astronomical Drawings vs. NASA Images
  7. Crows recently demonstrated an understanding of the concept of zero
  8. The Associations Between Music Training, Musical Working Memory, and Visuospatial Working Memory
  9. Bodhisattva
  10. I have updated my Epigrams & Witticisms page: there you can find remarks and observations, japeries and/or jocularities, nominative determinism, and discursive drollery are all examples of witticisms. This is a collection of quotes that I find myself using on a regular basis, but which were not necessarily coined by me. This is a mix of what I have already found online + some enhancements of my own.
  11. Engineering the Current Thing & Availability Cascades and Risk Regulation:“An availability cascade is a self-reinforcing process of collective belief formation by which an expressed perception triggers a chain reaction that gives the perception increasing plausibility through its rising availability in public discourse. The driving mechanism involves a combination of informational and reputational motives: Individuals endorse the perception partly by learning from the apparent beliefs of others and partly by distorting their public responses in the interest of maintaining social acceptance.”
  12. The Overman and the Arahant: Models of Human Perfection in Nietzsche and Buddhism. Two models of human perfection proposed by Nietzsche and the Buddha are investigated. Both the overman and the arahant need practice and individual effort as key to their realization, and they share roughly the same conception of the self as a construction. However, there are also a number of salient differences.
  13. Is the Übermensch the same as the Buddha?
  14. Assembly Theory: A new theory of alien life | Sara Walker and Lee Cronin and Lex Fridman
  15. Oikobezoar by ctrlcreep i.e.science fiction stories to bleed in the dark. It reminds me of the A Hannibalistic Approach to Life scribble I wrote. “This home is a short-term memory palace, a reflection of my mood, my ruminations, the darting fish at the surface of my attention. I do not keep extensive notes; the walls are my reminders, and when I close my eyes and walk backwards through their architectural history, I can perfectly infer past states of mind. My synesthesia is unusual; it works upon the world. Every thought has a corresponding space, one I struggle to make real, coaxing the nanobrick with keywords and descriptive tricks. Calculating and recalculating, capturing each frame of a self. Understand: this house is a model of my brain. As such, it is so very very important that every detail is progressing towards correctness. Today, I find something deeply troubling: a room of unknown provenance.”
War stories
🇺🇦 You can donate to support the people in Ukraine.
All funds will be used to help those in need, affected by armed conflict, blood collection, mobilization of volunteers and resources, and emergency activities.
I also want to share a message from one Ukrainian student in my community who has helped me receive news from the ground since the war started. Here’s what he said.
“Generally there are three types of funds:
  1. International
  2. Big Ukrainian
  3. Medium and tiny
To help displaced refugees only, search for western Ukraine towns and city council facebook and telegram groups with verified checkmark. A lot of people lost homes and now reside crowded with really cheap food in schools and other public places.
Search for something like «Міська рада», they must have listed separate IBANs.
For soldier’s needs there are also divisions asking for help directly, example: https://t.me/ua_stalker/1878 . They need tactical stuff as well.”

If not supporting it gets you disinvited from the dinner party, it’s the current thing.

Today, Elon tweeted this diagram by @SwipeWright, which sums up how a lot of people (including me) feel. Then a bunch of ppl responded w/ graphs showing that Republican politicians have moved farther right in that time than Dems have moved left. Here's what I think is happening: https://t.co/hWDZiRI1k6
I love Twitter. Twitter is the closest thing we have to a global consciousness.
If @elonmusk manages to liberate Twitter, efforts to control free speech will move to the Apple / Google level, and then to the national level.
Lex Fridman
Elon Musk acquiring Twitter is a big win for free speech.
