I’m currently on a three-week road trip through the Northeast and Canada. It’s fun, exhausting, and a daily reminder of how much sugar we as a society thoughtlessly consume.
I will admit I live in a bit of a bubble (in which I still complain about the endless fried chicken and BBQ joints). Healthy food is readily available and my immediate culture doesn’t think every, single thing should have a mound of sugar in it. Although, it’s still too much.
One night in Kane, PA was a bit of an eye-opener. Everything, and I mean every single menu item in our dinner place had sugar in it. The beer of choice? Peach milkshake IPA. It’s like we’ve all reverted back to our six year old dream diet.
True story: at breakfast the next morning we found a cute place that made a simple egg scramble with veggies and coffee. As the waitress took our plates, she asked us, had we saved room for strawberry cheesecake?
No! For the record, no one should save room for aprés-breakfast cheesecake. How is this even a thing?
Weirdly, being offered all this sugar has made me even more sensitive to it. It’s clear sugar is wreaking havoc in the American diet, and I’ve dug my heels in even harder to limit my consumption.
Life and food are plenty beautiful in their natural state.
