Hey urbanists!
It’s impossible to put a positive spin on the events of Sunday night when one of Uber’s self-driving test vehicles killed a pedestrian. I posted my thoughts last night, but decided to feature some other perspectives below. Alex Roy’s piece, in particular, is a must read.
The rest of this issue has some fascinating topics: Sidewalk LabsToronto project shows how Google intends to capture more of our data, Emmanuel Macron’s misguided attack on French rail-workers unions, the future of urbanization, and some good news about the US federal budget at the very end.
Finally, a quick update on the newsletter. We did pass 100 subscribers 🎉 last Sunday — currently at 105 — so a big thank you if you did share it with fellow urbanists.
Have a great Sunday!

Tesla was the first company to have a self-driving vehicle kill its driver. Uber is the first to have a self-driving vehicle kill a pedestrian. They also have some of the worst tech in the industry. Coincidence? https://t.co/EXKXtPRIkA

it’s too early to say what happened, but let’s not lose sight of the Forest for the trees. Urban design that is hostile to people isn’t going to magically get better just because a computer is driving.
