At this point, we all know that streaming royalties have become a larger and larger share of revenue within the music industry, but how those royalties are calculated by DSP’s is still somewhat of a mystery to artists, labels, and consumers.
With many indie songwriters concerned about how the Mechanical Licensing Collective created by the Music Modernization Act will handle the buildup of blackbox royalties from 2014-2019, it was announced that distributions will not occur before 2023.
The UK Intellectual Property Office has said that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain could provide crucial data management solutions for the music industry, but only after several underlying problems are addressed.
