Insights from a UX-lead at a design agency in Utrecht

Just got back from the Usbynight Festival in Antwerp and will share some of the highlights.
Absolut highlight on Thursday was David Carson. All-time graphical design hero and still going strong. Especially refreshing to see his work as a contrast between the digital world moving to guides, systems and automation. ‘Never snap to guides’ was one of his mantra’s
Another recurring theme was the amount of work people kept making. Just keep on creating and then eventually magic happens. Like Zach lieberman who keeps creating poetry with code every day. Loved his app ’Wierd type’ as a result of one of his experiments. Or Shantell Martin who found a way to keep drawing without thinking and turned it into a successful business.
And with the opening phrase 'i just had a case of red bull, you’re fucked’, Joshua Davids merciless bombarded the audience with his code based animations. Apart from the super spacy experiments, it was great to see it used in commercial work for big brands.
And thank god design didn’t lose his humour too. Like the host, Mr Bingo who’s work is drenched with sarcasm. Check out his 2018 Advert Calender to scratch out naked people up until Christmas.
Erik Kessels did one of the final talks about hating the whole marketing industry and coming up with uncompromising idea’s people either hate or love. And what better way to end a festival with a book full of nazi’s taking a shit!
