We’re still fighting the Online Safety Bill here in Australia. The Senate Committee reviewed and recommend it be passed despite the submission of over 300 letters that were strongly against the bill as it is currently written.
Again, this bill is going to affect all Australians in an incredibly negative way. Members of parliament have described the bill as ‘half-cooked’ but followed it up by saying that ‘something is better than nothing’ - a woefully untrue statement that shows the mentality of the current government is to get is passed now and fix any fall-outs as they happen. This does not work, as we’ve already seen happen in the US and UK; it will only lead to the further oppression of already marginalised groups and the recovery time after such damage is done will take many years.
