What does it mean to conserve performance art, to extend its lifespan into the future? While art museums have begun to exhibit as well as collect works of performance, questions remain as to how such processes of institutionalization and historicization shift – or, perhaps, distort – the meaning and experience of such works. Art historian and critic Claire Bishop will discuss these and related questions with the research team behind the SNSF research project Performance: Conservation, Materiality, Knowledge.
Claire Bishop is professor of art history at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Bishop holds a 2002 PhD from the University of Essex and has authored several influential books, including Installation Art: A Critical History (2005), Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship (2012), and Tania Bruguera in Conversation with/en conversación con Claire Bishop (2020).

This panel for the College Art Association’s annual conference, chaired by Hanna Hölling and Julia Pelta Feldman, will take place online on March 3, 2022, 9-10:30 a.m. CST / 4-5:30 p.m. CET. Submissions are welcome from practitioners, theorists, and anyone in between.
As contemporary art has grown more demanding, conservation has also grown as a discipline, developing new discourses and practices that both revise and expand the conservator’s role. No longer confined behind the scenes, conservators are now routinely asked to consult on acquisitions, direct complex installations, or even creatively partake in the reinstantiation of conceptual and performance works. Conservators accordingly have a new consciousness of their influence on the work of art and thus the course of art history.
