Opening: 'The Tar Pit Trap' by Thomas van Rijs
From Friday September 17th you can come by our Showroom to see the work of Thomas van Rijs in an exhibition called ‘The Tar Pit Trap’. For this upcoming show, Thomas has been researching the fragmented and twisted events from our collective memory while still reflecting on his own memories.

Thomas has based his artistic practice on recreating and distorting his own memories, while mixing it with visual material that he has been collecting for years now. In his work, he brings the shapes of floor plans, models, technical drawings and inspiration from military and marine influences together with visual elements from comics, computer games, movies, dioramas and fragments from encyclopedias. These diverse elements that populate his paintings, enter into a new dialoge with each other, and thereby acquire a new meaning.

For ‘The Tar Pit Trap’, Thomas draws inspiration from tar pits as remnants of the past. Tar pits are known for containing fossils, which are preserved by being buried quickly and getting engulfed with asphalt. They conserve time! In his show, Thomas compares memories to fossils and he excavates from his own and our collective tar pit.
Events that transpired in these past centuries, that shaped society as a whole, have been reinterpreted and re-evaluated in Thomas’ characteristic working method. This exhibition will be a dialogue between society’s collective memory and Thomas’ own memories.
