Hey All,
Less than a month to go for the next Open Voice on May 14th back at Mirabeau. Keep the afternoon open! More news next week.
We’ve been busy on stage the last weeks! Sam spoke at NRC’s AI event, did a Voice-commerce round table at Savant eCommerce Amsterdam, opened Voice marketing in 1 day and did a SXSW recap at the publisher WPG. Maarten went from taking the stage at the Emerce Recruitment event, to Lukkien, to the media group Persgroep and he also did two dialog design workshops at Deloitte’s AI Expert Center event. It seems Voice is all the rage 8-)
As was the clickbait news. We know it happens but still, it is sad to see a lack of understanding and thorough reporting - or worse -, the click bate headlines, about the Google Assistant placing links in their screen version and Amazon checking audio coming in on their speakers. This is how we ended up with Terminator as a personification of AI (spoiler, neither machine or deep learning is anything like Terminator). We don’t want people to mistake a smart speaker for an open microphone in their private space when it’s actually not. We looked up what really is going on, see below.
Make sure to check out the latest Voice cast show on www.bnr.nl/voicecast. Episode 11 will go live on (this) Monday the 15th, 4:30 pm-ish. We’ll dive deep into conversational copy writing and how it is different from copywriting for web or any other written copy.

It's all about context: people will happily listen to radio ads all day long, but add them to a smart speaker and it feels, just... wrong.

During @cpearl42's talk yesterday, she mentioned various things voice assistants can't yet do, such as interpret silence - one of our most powerful ways of communicating. Immediately brought to mind this scene from Ocean's Eleven. #VoiceFirst CC @Applause
