Hi!
Last week we went live with the BNR Voice Cast show where we had Timo Snoek and Rob van Nistelrooij from PostNL as our guests. We discussed Apple Music which is now live via Amazon Alexa, and Google Duplex being rolled out to Pixel 3 users for select use cases and Alibaba’s Voice one-upping Google Duplex. Listen & subscribe on Spotify or Apple podcast.
Now, let’s get on with a thought and other news from last week.

To Fad or not to fad
Occasionally we hear from people who are afraid that Voice may be just a fad. They ignore the statistics and have an underwhelming first personal experience with Voice. Benedict Evens’ tweet below is a good thought to ponder. Clearly Voice is in its early days.
It also doesn’t help that Google and Amazon don’t offer a level playing field. Developers on these platforms don’t have access like the tech giant have themselves. How will they ever make services on par with the platforms?
This needs to be solved. Samsung says it will it will offer a level playing field with Bixby 2.
Let’s see. Either way. We continue to be excited and keep reporting from the edge of the Voice movement with the Open Voice events, this newsletter, the Voice Cast Show and public speaking. Help spread the word!
📼 Car Cassette Navigation System
See things in perspective; while the hype is real, Voice assistance in cars has been around for nearly half a century (at least in theory). Check this turn by turn navigation concept from the ‘70s. It sounds kind of bizarre until you see how they made it work. Then it makes perfect sense…

Twitter is good for Voice discussions
Benedict Evens (VC, tech pundit) is a smart guy. You’d better listen when he shares his thoughts. We strongly believe that Voice is here to stay, but it’s good to have nuanced view. No need to a be pure fanboy or girl at all times. Follow the link to see the discussion which follows.
Benedict Evans
I do not think smart speakers have product-market fit. Or more precisely, I think the fit they have found is not one that gives Amazon or Google any great strategic benefit
Show time
Tomorrow (Tuesday, December 18th) we’ll be in Hilversum at the Cross Media Cafe where Maarten will do a keynote, along with Open Voice veterans Jeroen de Bakker (Talpa / Open Voice #01) and Vera Holland (KRO-NCRV / Open Voice #03). Get your (free) tickets while they last.
That’s it for this week. Next week we’ll be back with a new newsletter, and another episode of the Voice Cast Show.
Cheers,
– Maarten & Sam
