Week 5 - Recap of CU-ASU, looking ahead to USC game

I am fresh off a road trip to see the CU-ASU game. I had an epic time with longtime friends, and crossed paths CU with coaches, media and some current and a few former players.

Takeaways from ASU game
  • Brendon Lewis still very much a work in progress - in the mean time the offense is bottom in the FBS in key offensive statistics. Points Per Drive (.55/129); Yds Per Play (3.46/127); Yds Per Pass (4.2/129); Still seemed to hold on to the ball a split second too long on occasion; TTT (3.09); Most passes are underneath
  • Offensive Line is not doing well in pass protection: Team Pass Blocking is Poor; Blew was under pressure on 10 of his 22 attempts. Kary Kutch is the most consistent OL by grade;
  • Defensive remains solid for the most part: Nate Landman continues his quest, leading all FBS in solo tackles. Corners played good, per usual. Defense did pretty good job against the run. Still having trouble with underneath pass coverage on RBs and TE
  • Penalties reared their ugly head - for late hits, roughing the passer that helped ASU extend drives
  • Bottom Line: ASU is more talented and they got the ball in the hands of their playmakers (Jaydon Daniels 6/73 running 236 yrds passing; Rachaad White 5/70 receiving, TE Curtis Hodges 2/38;
Looking at USC
  • Donte Williams is the interim coach, it’s his third game since USC fired Clay Helton
  • Roster Strength 12 in FBS, Still grade reasonably high in PFF grades across the board, although the run defense was poor last week.
  • QB Kedon Slovis play has regressed
  • USC defense had a hard time stopping the run against OSU
  • KD Nixon returns to Folsom in a USC uniform
Looking forward to...
  • Progress in the running game, Buffs had modest success with run game last week, let’s build on that
  • USC is a strong passing team, however the Buffs corners should match-up well against their WRs. Buffs need to shore up their coverage underneath on USC RBs and TEs
  • Return of “King” Mustafa Johnson - get’s a second chance to show his stuff and should add some juice to the one-gap scheme
  • BLew needs to make USC pay the price for single coverage and stacking the box, by air or by legs
  • Development, get better every day - this is a young team, especially at QB, WR and T. KD has been here before. Mike Hankowitz, DC for Kansas and former CU coordinator slowed down CU’s offense in 95 when KD was the OC. (See Neil Woulk article Looking Back 1995 season)
  • Westbrook will be honored - During the USC game, former CU standout wide receiver Michael Westbrook will be inducted into the Buffs Hall of Fame.
